My background as a webhost has placed me in the position of watching new home-based businesses go online. When they come to me, they are already armed with the knowledge that step number 1 is to get a domain name and web hosting. If you are new, you have a couple of options here. For example, if you want to set up a blog, you could create a site with free hosting such as Blogger or Tumblr. Starting a blog for free is relatively easy and you don’t need to worry about web hosting and domain names but there is a downside when using free services for your business.
Downside Of Free Services
- The domain name will not be customized for your business name and will always include some “extra” part to it that makes it look less professional: eg, http://yourusername.tumblr.com instead of http://www.yourbusinessname.com.
- Most free services do not provide you with customized email addresses such as [email protected]
- Your website address is not portable. Conversely, if you purchase a customized domain name, you can move to any webhost at any time without losing the address.
- You may be limited by the type of content and not allowed to advertise anything.
- Little to no tech support.
I recommend going with a self-hosted website because you have more control, it looks far more professional and you have technical support from your host when you need it.
If you want to host your website on Australian servers, you’re welcome to check out my web hosting business. If you are from anywhere else in the world, I recommend going with BlueHost (disclosure: we are affiliated) to register your domain and host your website. I’ve used and interacted with Bluehost for many years. They’re always very reliable and quick to answer questions through live chat.
